Mogadishu,(insidesomalia.org)-At least 90 people have died and dozens have been wounded in several attacks in the past two days in Somalia, despite the peace agreement signed last Tuesday between the Transitional Government and several Islamic rebel groups.
Fifty of those killed were Ethiopian soldiers who were the focus of the attacks. In retaliation, soldiers massacred at least 40 civilians.
The Ethiopian forces, which support the Transitional Government, backed by the UN, discharged several missiles at the Bakara market, killing 12 people and wounding at least 25 others. Eight people, including two Ethiopian soldiers, were killed in a mortar attack against Islamic fundamentalist rebels at the Presidential Palace in the Somali capital.
In the city of Kismayo, 500 kilometers south of Mogadishu, have at least 10 people died in a fight between Islamic fundamentalist guerrillas of Al Shabab and the militia of a local clan. An estimated 3,000 people have evacuated the area.
The Transitional Federal Government (TFG) of Somalia, supported by the UN and the African Union (AU), in Djibouti, on Tuesday signed a formal peace agreement with several groups of the New Partnership for the Liberation of Somalia (ARS). The UN independent expert on human rights in Somalia had welcomed the peace agreement between the country's transitional government and an opposition group, according to a statement published on the UN Website on Wednesday. The deal signed Monday was a "hopeful signal" in the war-torn nation where lasting peace can start to take root, said Shamsul Bari.
However, following the signing of the agreement, both sides have already shown their differences. Somalia has been without an effective Government since 1991, when the regime of dictator Siad Barre was overthrown by a group of "warlords".
Since then, they have clashed among themselves and have divided the country in areas controlled by clans.
